Today, the word we’re covering in our "One Word" column is "dān wèi" (unit/organization).

“单位”这个词大概有三个意思，

“dān wèi” | zhè ge | cí | dà gài | yǒu | sān gè | yì si

The word "dān wèi" has about three meanings:

第一，表示工作机构，

dì yī | biǎo shì | gōng zuò | jī gòu

1. Referring to a work organization,

在口语中直接指代 “上班的地方”，

zài | kǒu yǔ | zhōng | zhí jiē | zhǐ dài | “shàng bān | de | dì fang”

and in spoken language, it directly means "the place where one works"—

而且通常是国家机构。

ér qiě | tōng cháng | shì | guó jiā | jī gòu

usually a state-owned or public institution.

我们来看一些例句：

wǒ men | lái | kàn | yī xiē | lì jù

Let’s look at some examples:

我家离单位不远。

wǒ jiā | lí | dān wèi | bù yuǎn

My home is not far from my workplace.

他在科研单位工作。

tā | zài | kē yán | dān wèi | gōng zuò

He works in a scientific research institution.

你们单位有多少年假？

nǐ men | dān wèi | yǒu | duō shao | nián jià

How many days of annual leave does your organization offer?

我今天要去单位处理一些紧急工作。

wǒ | jīn tiān | yào | qù | dān wèi | chǔ lǐ | yī xiē | jǐn jí | gōng zuò

I need to go to the office today to handle some urgent work.

他从原单位辞职后，创业开了一家小店。

tā | cóng | yuán | dān wèi | cí zhí | hòu | chuàng yè | kāi | le | yī jiā | xiǎo diàn

After resigning from his previous employer, he started his own business and opened a small shop.

如果是私人企业呢，一般说“公司”，

rú guǒ | shì | sī rén | qǐ yè | ne | yī bān | shuō | “gōng sī”

For private enterprises, we usually say "gōng sī" (company):

比如：我们公司新换了办公地址。

bǐ rú | wǒ men | gōng sī | xīn | huàn | le | bàn gōng | dì zhǐ

For example: Our company just moved to a new office address.

第二，表示计量标准，

dì èr | biǎo shì | jì liàng | biāo zhǔn

2. Referring to a unit of measurement:

比如：长度单位，时间单位。

bǐ rú | cháng dù | dān wèi | shí jiān | dān wèi

For example: unit of length, unit of time.

这个零件的计量单位是毫米。

zhè ge | líng jiàn | de | jì liàng | dān wèi | shì | háo mǐ

The unit of measurement for this part is millimeters.

温度的单位有摄氏度和华氏度两种。

wēn dù | de | dān wèi | yǒu | shè shì dù | hé | huá shì dù | liǎng zhǒng

There are two units of temperature: Celsius and Fahrenheit.

米、千克、秒都是国际标准单位。

mǐ | qiān kè | miǎo | dōu shì | guó jì | biāo zhǔn | dān wèi

Meters, kilograms, and seconds are all international standard units.

电压的基本单位是伏特，电流的单位是安培。

diàn yā | de | jī běn | dān wèi | shì | fú tè | diàn liú | de | dān wèi | shì | ān péi

The basic unit of voltage is the volt, and the unit of electric current is the ampere.

第三，表示组成部分。

dì sān | biǎo shì | zǔ chéng | bù fèn

3. Referring to a component part:

家庭是社会的最小单位。

jiā tíng | shì | shè huì | de | zuì xiǎo | dān wèi

The family is the smallest unit of society.

细胞是构成生物体的基本单位。

xì bāo | shì | gòu chéng | shēng wù tǐ | de | jī běn | dān wèi

The cell is the basic unit of living organisms.

这个机器由上百个独立的单位组成。

zhè ge | jī qì | yóu | shàng bǎi | gè | dú lì | de | dān wèi | zǔ chéng

This machine is composed of hundreds of independent units.

像素是数字图像的基本组成单位。

xiàng sù | shì | shù zì | tú xiàng | de | jī běn | zǔ chéng | dān wèi

The pixel is the basic component unit of digital images.
